Reaching the first page of a Google search is the “holy grail” for companies conducting business online, according to a speaker at the Internet World Conference.
“If you’re selling anything online, the Holy Grail is to be on page one of one of the main search engines,” said the speaker. “That doesn’t mean the smaller boys can’t compete with smaller budgets, they just have to be a little bit more intelligent about it.”
She said that adopting natural search engine marketing strategies is best, because the ever evolving search engine algorithms will only give businesses high search rankings “if you’ve got that authority and if you are relevant”.
Being on page one of any Google search is important because the majority of people don’t explore past the first page and a higher ranking gives the implicit notion of authority.
A recent report from the Chief Marketing Officer Council indicated that media budgets for areas such as search engine marketing and social networking are rising by more than five per cent.
In another talk at the conference, an SEO specialist highlighted how PPC and organic SEO can play a key role in protecting the identity of a brand. Earlier this week, it was noted that consumer fears of fraudulent retailers, mixed with the risk of social networking sites spreading bad press, meant that businesses now need strategies to protect their brand more than ever.
